MOHAWK HISTORY

the birthplace of snowmaking

IN 1947 WALT SCHOENKNECHT OPENED MOHAWK MOUNTAIN SKI AREA FOR ALL TO ENJOY. NESTLED ON THE NORTHWEST SLOPE OF THE MOUNTAIN, IT OFFERS 112 SKIABLE ACRES OVER 300 SCENIC ACRES OF STATE FOREST. WALT WAS THE PIONEER OF MANMADE SNOWMAKING, LEADING THE EFFORTS BEHIND THE TECHNOLOGY THAT IS USED WORLDWIDE TODAY!

SNOWMAKING

SNOWMAKING TECHNOLOGY STARTED BY SHAVING DOWN BLOCKS OF ICE. WALT LATER CREATED A WAY TO MIX WATER, COLD AIR AND ICE THROUGH A MACHINE TO CREATE MANMADE SNOW.

PINE LODGE, OUR MID-MOUNTAIN LODGE, WAS THE SCHOENKNECHT FAMILY HOME FOR MANY YEARS BEFORE MOHAWK MOUNTAIN SKI AREA OPENED IN 1947.

WALT SCHOENKNECHT

WALT ALSO FOUNDED MOUNT SNOW AND WAS INDUCTED INTO THE NATIONAL SKI HALL OF FAME, HAVING BEEN AN AVID & TALENTED SKIER HIMSELF.

FAMILY RUN

WALT OPENED THE MOUNTAIN TO THE PUBLIC THE SAME YEAR HIS DAUGHTER, CAROL LUGAR, WAS BORN. TODAY, MOHAWK MOUNTAIN IS STILL FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED WITH CAROL AS CO-OWNER AND PRESIDENT.

REBUILDING

IN 1989, A TORNADO HIT MOHAWK MOUNTAIN, DESTROYING MUCH OF THE SURROUNDING FOREST AND DAMAGING THE LIFTS AND STRUCTURES OF THE MOUNTAIN. SINCE THEN, REBUILDING THE SKI AREA TO BE BETTER THAN EVER HAS BEEN A TOP PRIORITY.
